What Makes Proton Therapy Different?

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses protons rather than traditional X-rays. It targets tumors and cancer cells more precisely. This means less damage to surrounding tissue which results in a lower risk of side effects and a better quality of life during and after cancer treatment.

Fewer treatment complications mean that physicians can deliver higher doses of proton radiation to cancer sites, and an increased dose of proton radiation can improve the chances for a successful outcome.

Florida Cancer Center of Excellence Award

As part of the University of Florida Health Cancer Center, the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute is designated by the State of Florida as a Florida Cancer Center of Excellence. The prestigious distinction was first awarded for a three-year term in March 2015 and consecutively renewed in 2018 and 2021.

American College of Radiology Accreditation

The ACR seal of accreditation in radiation oncology represents the highest level of quality and patient safety. UF Health Proton Therapy Institute earned a three-year term of accreditation in 2015 and consecutive renewals in 2018 and 2021. Of the dozens of proton therapy centers in the U.S., we are one of the few proton therapy facilities to achieve this recognition.
