The UF Health Proton Therapy Institute Experts Present Research and Best Practices at Medical and Scientific Conferences

The UF Health Proton Therapy Institute participated in the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, held May 31 to June 4 in Chicago. Dr. Raymond Mailhot was a presenter during a poster session about evaluating scholastic achievement in pediatric brain tumor survivors compared to healthy controls. Many other UF Health Proton Therapy Institute physicians participated in the research study.

In June, Dr. Nancy Mendenhall presented an educational session at the annual Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) Conference in Singapore focused on proton therapy for prostate cancer and the latest patient outcomes. She also co-chaired a clinical panel discussion about the ability of proton therapy to spare the heart, specifically in cases of lung, lymphoma and breast cancer. PTGOG, now in its 62nd year, is the premier gathering of innovators, thought leaders and pioneers in the field of particle therapy. Dr. Mendenhall is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Particle Therapy, the official journal of the PTCOG.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Grant to Support UF Study of Insurance Inequities in Hodgkin Lymphoma Treatment and Survivorship

A three-year, $741,832 grant from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Equity in Access Research Program will allow a team of UF researchers to better understand the relationships between the disparities among racially and ethnically minoritized patients. Led by Co-principal Investigators Raymond B. Mailhot, MD, MPH, Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UF College of Medicine and physician at the Institute, and Erin M. Mobley, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville, the team will leverage the grant in support of their novel study, “Insurance Inequities in Hodgkin Lymphoma Treatment and Survivorship in the Southeast.”

Dr. Indelicato Named an ASTRO Fellow

Daniel J. Indelicato, MD, has been selected by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) among 48 distinguished members to receive the ASTRO Fellow (FASTRO) designation for its 2024 class, and will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 1 during ASTRO’s 66th Annual Meeting.

The ASTRO Fellows program recognizes individuals who have made substantial contributions to the Society and to the field of radiation oncology through research, education, patient care and service to the field. Read more about this accolade, here.

Congratulations to Our Physicians

Julie A. Bradley, MD, MHCDS, was promoted from Associate Professor to Professor with tenure in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida. Dr. Bradley specializes in breast cancer and pediatric cancer treatment and research.

Romaine Charles Nichols, Jr., MD, was promoted from Associate Professor to Clinical Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology in the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Nichols treats lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and gastrointestinal cancer.
